Meet your local blacksmith Greg Burns from Oak Tree Forge when he brings a mobile forge to the library's backyard!
Blacksmiths are artisans who craft metal into functional and decorative pieces using traditional techniques. Blacksmiths possess a unique blend of skill, strength, and creativity, allowing them to create everything from nails to intricate iron gates. A conversation with a blacksmith can unveil the rich history of the trade, insights into the meticulous process of forging, and inspire you to try your hand at this ancient craft. Engaging with your local blacksmith not only supports a traditional trade but also connects you to the roots of craftsmanship and community heritage.
During this session, participants will be treated to a small demo showcasing the foundational techniques used in forging, such as heating, hammering, and shaping metal. Greg will guide attendees through the essential tools, including anvils, hammers, tongs, and forges, explaining their specific uses and maintenance. The interactive segment allows for questions and answers, where participants can clarify doubts, learn safety tips, and gain insights into the artistry and science behind forging.
